Assistant Headteacher

Job Title: Assistant Headteacher – Complex Needs & ASD (Secondary)
Pay Rate: L12 - L16
Location: Birmingham
Hours: Full-time

 

Smart Education is currently recruiting for an Assistant Headteacher to join a progressive and inclusive SEN school in Birmingham from September. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated SEND professional who is passionate about driving school improvement and supporting learners with autism and complex learning needs.

Main Purpose of the Role:
Working alongside the Headteacher, you will provide strategic leadership in teaching and learning, with a specific focus on the Complex Needs (Structured/Sensory) pathway. You will support school improvement, staff development, and curriculum leadership while promoting inclusion and high standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Strategic Leadership & School Development

  • Shape and deliver school aims and improvement plans

  • Lead communication strategy and monitor student progress

  • Provide guidance to governors and contribute to evaluations

  • Oversee the Complex Needs curriculum and provision

 

Teaching, Learning & Curriculum

  • Lead the Discovery base operations

  • Promote excellent teaching and learning practices

  • Monitor progress, support planning, and deliver targeted teaching

  • Ensure consistency in assessment and reporting

 

Assessment & Outcomes

  • Lead on assessment strategy and ILPs

  • Track and report on student outcomes to SLT, governors, and families

  • Maintain accurate records of progress and achievement

 

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Line manage support staff and support appraisals

  • Provide CPD based on outcome data and needs

  • Lead collaborative training to support improvement

  • Foster a positive and supportive team culture

 

Resource Management & Safeguarding

  • Oversee pupil welfare, transitions, and off-site provision

  • Liaise with governors and leaders to recruit and retain high-quality staff

  • Support curriculum and policy development

  • Ensure safeguarding procedures are fully upheld

 

Communication & External Relations

  • Lead briefings and departmental communication

  • Work closely with the Inclusion Manager and external agencies

  • Maintain strong links with educational partners and local services

 

Candidate Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Leadership experience within a special school or SEN provision

  • Strong knowledge of autism and complex learning needs

  • Ability to lead curriculum planning, assessment, and school improvement

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills

  • A collaborative, child-centred approach to leadership
